I always remember hearing this phrase as a child and once I became an adult or should I say broke college student the phrase money doesn't grow on trees took a different meaning. I wasn't taught much about debt, budgeting, investing, or really anything about money matters outside of balancing a check book and counting money. After graduating I joined corp america and thought this isn't so bad; benefits, vacation time, and weekly cash coming in from work I could do with my eyes shut. I don't know what transformed in me but I despise corp. america now. There is a lose of freedom that one either deals with internally or by creating bad habits to cope with being a corp. slave. Sitting at a desk during the most vital time of my life and the best part of the day is not a complaint the unemployed want to hear I'm sure, but I also doubt anyone feels they were put on this earth to create, review, or read emails and reports all day. I certainly know many in corp. america who work hard or not, with the only goal being to "reward" themselves and sometimes others quickly AFTER. Working for money affects individuals differently I'm sure some people take pride in what they do and enjoy their job. This is great we should do things we enjoy in life and if you get paid those things that is even better, but lets not forget about our own personal goals in the process of relishing in happiness and satisfaction.
Back to the topic at hand I take the quote very differently now. I now value and respect money in a way I never have. I know people and time are more important than money or job security. Money should be respected and you will attract more. I no longer spend outside of my means or even within my means, pleasures have to wait for the successes I'm trying to accomplish. I know that money doesn't grow on trees but it can grow if invested properly. Money can work for you, so that you do not have to. This thinking doesn't come out of thin air and certainly changing habits takes dedication and some self learning at the least. Stay motivated and you will be the change you need to succeed.
To those of you just getting into wealth building regardless of age or net worth I recommend some of the links below to get you started. I plan on talking about both books and others at some point and look forward to this. I also recommend doing a Google or Amazon search for targeted books that meet your learning desires but these are excellent starters as well as the Rich dad books.
